Connecting PlanePlotter directly to RTL1090

The beauty of technology today is that it provides for flexibility, often allowing you to achieve one thing in many ways. In my last blog post, I showed you how to go from RTL1090 to Virtual Radar Server, and then to branch the feed off to PlanePlotter, ADSBScope and FlightRadar24’s feeder software. This time around, I’ll focus on connecting PlanePlotter directly to RTL1090, eliminating the middle man that is Virtual Radar Server.

PlanePlotter

Beginning with PlanePlotter version 6.3.3, you can configure it to connect directly to an instance of RTL1090. You would begin, of course, by installing and configuring RTL1090 the way I described in my first post. You would also need to install PlanePlotter as I describe, but when it comes to setup the steps are slightly different…and in fact slightly shorter.

  •  Go to Options > Home location > Home location setup and enter your latitude and longitude. You can use W and S to specify co-ordinates west of the prime meridian or south of the equator (e.g. N43.55555, W79.33333)
  • Next go to  Options > I/O settings. Under Input data, make sure Mode-S/ADS-B is turned on, and in the list of receivers scroll down and select RTL Dongle.
  • In order to view the aircraft, click Process > Start. If all went well, planes should start appearing in PlanePlotter.

  1. Thanks for posting the details of your earlier entry.
    I setup my $20 dongle directly as you documented above, and it was fine except I could only do one Radar program at a time.

    Your earlier entry documenting how to connect multiple programs to one dongle is excellent, and I will be leaving mine setup that way from now on.

      My instructions for connecting PlanePlotter to RTL1090 are just that: instructions for connecting PlanePlotter to RTL1090. There is an advanced option in PlanePlotter, under Options > IO Options, to have PlanePlotter act as a server as well, essentially rebroadcasting the data just like Virtual Radar Server does, but it’s limited to one format. VRS is more flexible that way.

    Thanks for your input on the RTL1090/PlanePlotter setup! Your time and help is appreciated !!!
    What will I see on the PlanePlotter screen to show my dongle intercepts? I am curious as to what I am getting. I am getting about 25 mile range from the 4″ antenna that came with the dongle, about 5 feet from a west facing window, using the PlanePlotter plots, Waiting for a adapter so I can connect to my outside antenna.

    1. I’m not sure I understand your question, given that you’ve already got PlanePlotter working with your dongle. Once you get that antenna outside, you’ll get much more than 25 nautical miles, though, that’s for sure! I’m using that little 4″ antenna, seven storeys up, and I routinely get more than 200 nautical miles and frequently hit 250 nautical miles. What distance you get depends on your surroundings (trees, buildings, mountains in the way) and any interference from other electronic sources. Have fun!

        Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry if my question came out wrong. I meant that with all the planes that PlanePlotter shows on the local map, how do I know which aircraft I am contributing to the mix. Which are my “local” planes. I guess I can cross off the “up” and “down” arrows and see what shows up as I sometimes do when I run ACARS /PlanePlotter.

        1. In PlanePlotter under Options > Chart > Options you can assign different colours to the labels of your local and shared aircraft so you can distinguish between which ones you are picking up locally and which ones you are receiving from the community.

          1. Great idea Rob ! Worked like a charm. All my plots are now “red” !!
            Also connected the dongle to my discone up at 45-50′. Also made a BIG difference. Supprised I don’t get more aircraft & positions though!!
