I’ve had a few emails from people curious about how all of the applications mentioned on this site connect together. Apart from the step-by-step instructions, the best way I can think of to show the flow of data is with a chart. So below is a diagram with all the connections. There isn’t any great detail; it’s more of a roadmap. I hope it helps you visualize the path your data can take from one app to another in the virtual radar world. This is also how I have my systems setup. Yes, systems — plural — because all of this doesn’t run on just one PC in my house (though it could if you had enough horsepower in your CPU). Click on the graphic for a larger view.

  1. This is very good! I was wondering if the basic data could be shared with many applications or websites.

  2. Hello from Chile, your site give me new ideas to walk in the road of ads-b with rtl2832u. The idea is share this knowlegde to lead the masification of this devices here.

  3. Hi Rob

Outstanding help as usual. Just looking to integrate a lot of things through VRS 2.0….

So, I have an SBS1e on a seperate machine, I have a microADSB, I have an RTL on RTL1090 and a Dump1090 feed from a remote location! Quite busy.

What I am trying to do is get VRS to output on say 33003 the merged output which I then convert using com2tcp to 10001 for BS to see and pick up. It will then update the sqb and with Active Display keep everything up to date.

Great theory but BS does not like the VRS output. I can set VRS to AVR or passthrough but BS just refuses to see any data and just resets the com line. No data is pulled from VRS. I have tried the basestation setting as well in VRS, changed the com bat from –sbsbin to just –sbs. Out of ideas here.

I have just tried just the RTL as the feed. no dice.

Any thoughts? Is this one for Andrew @VRS?

    1. Hey, Jon, take a look at my updated post on this subject: http://sonicgoose.com/integrating-virtual-radar-applications/ Basically I’m now using two command line applications, tcp2com and hub4com, to split the feed from RTL1090 into three different streams. One of these is for BaseStation, one for PlanePlotter, and the third for Virtual Radar Server. I’ll dig up the batch script I use and you can modify it to suit your own needs.

      1. Here’s the batch script:

        [start]
::input from rtl1090 output to com20 com21 pair
        Start/min com2tcp –baud 3000000 –parity o \\.\COM20 127.0.0.1 31001

::output from com4 split input to com30, com40 and com50
        Start/min hub4com –baud=3000000 –octs=off \\.\COM21 \\.\COM30 \\.\COM40 \\.\COM50

::output from com31 input to tcp port 10001 for BaseStation
        Start/min com2tcp –baud 3000000 –ignore-dsr –sbsbin \\.\COM31 10001

::output from com41 input to tcp port 30001 for PlanePlotter
        Start/min com2tcp –baud 3000000 –ignore-dsr \\.\COM41 30001

::output from com51 input to tcp port 40001 for VRS
        Start/min com2tcp –baud 3000000 –ignore-dsr \\.\COM51 40001
        [end]

This assumes you have first used com0com to setup the com port pairs to use. I’ve read it’s best to use port pairs with numbers higher than 10 so as to avoid any potential complication with real physical ports that may exist on your PC.

      2. Hey Rob

Many thanks, I am trying to use VRS as a concentrator for data so the hub4com idea is not suitable. It would appear that there is a small bug in the rebroadcast side of VRS that Andrew and I are working on…

Pretty cold there at the moment?

        Jon
